Beret’s Light Kindergarten

For the Youngest Learners

Beret’s Light Kindergarten, a school for the first three years of a child’s education, opened its doors in February of 2017 on the grounds of the MercyLine Children’s Home in the village of Buwenda, Uganda.

Two teachers and two teaching assistants were hired to provide the first education to MercyLine’s youngest children, usually between the ages of 4-6.  Some slightly older children who come to MercyLine may not have attended school so they receive special attention in order to get up to speed.  Lessons are taught in a combination of the local language and English.

Before Beret’s Light Kindergarten opened, the young kids were forced to walk two miles to the overcrowded and underfunded local public school.  By opening the new school, MercyLine is able to offer children a better start to their education and a safer experience.  School fees paid to the public school now go to the Kindergarten, reducing the expenses involved in running the school.  In addition to MercyLine children, neighboring children who were unable to attend the public school for financial reasons and because of the distance, have begun attending classes.
