MercyLine started the Pencil Power Club in 2020 in order to meet the needs of adults, mostly women, who want to learn how to read and write in English. Pencil Power Club members likely missed the opportunity to get an education because they were raised in a family without the financial resources necessary for school enrollment. This program serves adults in five villages where MercyLine has existing ties.
One goal of improved adult literacy is to help women expand their options for making a living. Many Ugandans are self-employed, especially those living in smaller towns and villages. Knowing how to read contracts and other information makes Pencil Power Club members better suited to succeed in whatever business ventures they pursue.
Pencil Power Club members are enthusiastic learners! We at MercyLine are excited about the potential of this program.
